WHAT ARE FANLESS COMPUTERS?

“Fanless,” as the name implies, are computers that do not utilize a fan for cooling. Fans make up the common failure points of industrial PCs as it ends up drawing in contaminants that may lead to issues for the system, causing it to slow or possibly causing hardware failure. If you need optimal reliability, especially in harsh environments with dust, debris, or other particles, you should opt for fanless computers.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF FANLESS COMPUTERS?

There exist numerous benefits attached to the fanless computer design. However, the most notable of them is that they get rid of the most common failure point in computers, I.e., the fan. To boost reliability, especially in vibration-prone installation and shock, most fanless systems can be configured to be in a totally solid state. Being a completely solid state entails removing not just the fan but also movable parts. When there’s a completely solid-state solution, you get added benefits of carrying out silent operations, which are best suited for laboratory, digital signage, or broadcasting operations. 

HOW DO FANLESS COMPUTERS STAY COOL?

Fanless computers are always cool based on the principle of conduction. This entails that something hot dispelling heat into its surroundings via physical contact. Heat conduction is natural, but the level of heat dispelled can be influenced by design. 

The basic concept here involves placing heat-generating components like the computer’s CPU in direct contact with a heat sink. The heat sink then allows the heat emitted by the components to pass through and possibly into the surrounding air. 

Note that when designing a heat sink assembly, the materials you choose to use and how their parts interfere with each other should be considered.

FANLESS VS VENTLESS, WHICH ONE IS BEST?

Because a computer is fanless, it doesn’t mean that it’s got 100% protection from outside contaminants. Getting rid of the fan is just one part of boosting hardware reliability. The next essential step, however, is ensuring the system can effectively cool itself without needing vents. 

The term “ventless ” hasn’t been used widely by industries because it’s much harder to achieve, but some use it to show that a computer possesses no vents openings. It’s cooled effectively by several internal passive thermal management solutions and outside heat dissipation fins.

 Note that: Getting rid of the fan doesn’t make a system completely solid state. Aligning hardware with solid-state storage removes the final moving particles (that is, the spinning platters of an HDD). Therefore, this creates a totally silent system and high resistance to vibration, dust, and other airborne contaminants. Using wide temperature range components ensures that solid-state systems are ideal for installation in a wide range of extreme environments and conditions.
