The best memories with your family aren’t made on your phone or in front of your tv. They are made during human interaction time involving food, conversation and maybe even some wrestling. They are made when you all are having fun together doing whatever fun is for you and the people you love. Making memories is what makes life meaningful so that at the end of the day, the month or the year you can look back and laugh about all the great times you had. So don’t be afraid to try a new way to have fun, and if you are out of ideas, here are some ways you and yours can have a blast together, no matter what their ages are.

Break out the Toys

When is the last time you looked at the bottom of your child’s toy chest? There are probably some cars, dolls, or other treasures from Mattel that were birthday gifts long ago and haven’t seen daylight in years. Break out the toys that they used to love and bring them back to life. Set up a shooting gallery, a puppet show, a scavenger hunt or an obstacle course with some old favorites.

Let Them Lead

Put your kids in the driver’s seat and let them steer playtime. Let them lead the family time together with your full cooperation for their crazy ideas. Encouraging them to use their imagination and creativity stimulates their brain and let them know you have confidence in them. Give them what they need to succeed, such as food to make snacks out of, board and card games to choose from, as well as boxes, blankets, art supplies and tape, because every good playtime needs some make-believe world. Even teenagers like making forts out of mattresses and sheets, so don’t be surprised if your living room is transformed into a tent, a nest or a cave. Make sure you take pictures to show their future spouses and to share with grandparents and extended family.

Get Physical

At the end of the activities led by the kids, suggest something that involves getting physical. This may be determined by the weather, the season, your living situation or your physical capabilities, but if possible, get outside. Countless studies connect physical activity and healthy brain and body development. Make it an activity that they are not already involved in so it will be a nice change for everyone.
