Like a cough, diabetes, or high blood pressure, depression is a medical illness that must be treated. According to the WHO, 5% of all adults worldwide suffer from depression. It is real, and it is ugly. 

It could present as low self-esteem in one person and suicidal thoughts in another. Depression has many forms; it does not work the same way for everyone. Which is why today we see a lot of awareness session happening for depression and what it might look like. 

The great debate lies in whether you can treat depression with medication or prayer. While medication is necessary, prayers can also help people fight depression. 

In this article, I will highlight how you can overcome depression by praying.

Tips To Overcome Depression By Praying

The key to overcoming depression is a mix and blend of your belief in Allah, the fact that he has put you in some situation, and he will take you out of it as well, and don’t forget praying 5 times a day helps a lot.

In Quran, Allah says, “Allah is the Protector of those who have faith He will lead them from the depths of darkness into light. As for those who disbelieve, their patrons are the devils: from the light, they will lead them forth into the depths of darkness. They will be companions of the fire, to dwell therein (forever).” (Quran, 2:257)

  • Make Dua

God Almighty has said it very clearly in Quran to make dua, and all the problems will be solved.

Let me back this up by the actual quotation from Quran “and when My servants ask you, [O Muhammad], concerning me – indeed I am near. I respond to the invocation of the supplicant when he calls upon me. So let them respond to Me (by obedience) and believe in me that they may be (rightly) guided” (Quran 2:186).

  • Offer Daily Prayers; Five Times A Day

Prayers are a Muslim way of submitting himself and his problems to Allah. Giving his life and his allegiance to Allah Almighty is the best way you can prove yourself to Allah that you only rely on him to solve your problems.  This unique faith has done miracles, and IA will do for you as well.

The Quran says, “O you who have believed, seek help through patience and prayer. Indeed, Allah is with the patient” (Quran, 2:153)

Let me give you some examples from the life of Hazrat Ayesha with regards to Prophet Muhammad’s life, “He used to sleep early at night, and get up in its last part to pray, and then return to his bed.”

 The Prophet further used to say, “O Allah! I seek refuge with You from helplessness, laziness, cowardice, and feeble old age; I seek refuge with You from afflictions of life and death and seek refuge with You from the punishment in the grave.”

So offer your prayer at the correct prayer times, and be sure of your prayer time depending on where you live. Five-time a prayer, and there you go, God will take care of you, IA. Just have faith.

  • Do Zikr of Allah 

Zikr means talking about Allah. If you are sitting among your friends and family and you share something about Allah or praise him, or plain just share some story from Quran, this will give your heart peace. Why? Because God likes it when his people talk about him.

“Those who believe, and whose hearts find peace in the remembrance of Allah: for without doubt in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find peace.” (Quran, 13:28)

  • Read the Holy Quran

Reading the Holy Quran in itself is a very healing task. I am sure we have heard many of our elders say to read “Surah Yaseen” to ease the heart. Similarly, there is a lot of surahs in Quran that can help you fight your depression.

  • Seek Forgiveness For Your Past Sins

You must seek forgiveness From Allah while you are trying to see some light in life and fighting depression. Learn to forgive people so Allah can forgive you too. If you have committed grave sins, this is the time that you seek forgiveness for it, Not only from the person who was impacted by your sins but also Allah.

  • Have Patience

Having patience through tough times is the greatest form of the act the God’s love and then believing that God will soon help you out. This will help you through your depression.

It is mentioned in Quran, “Seek help through Sabr and Salah” (Quran 2:45).

  • Believe In Allah

Remember one thing always, Allah says in Quran, God does not burden any soul with more than it can bear” (Quran 2:286) andAllah is the Protector of those who have faith He will lead them from the depths of darkness into light-” (Quran 2:257)

It is further said in Quran, “When you have taken a decision, put your trust in Allah” (Quran 3: 159).

Pray your way Out of Depression!

When in depression, it may look like there is no way out, but if you follow the tips we mentioned above, you will be able to come out of this depression smiling and healthy. So do remember to pray, make dua, do zikr as often as you can, seek forgiveness from people and Allah Almighty.

It is also important you remember, curing yourself of depression is a slow process, so have patience, read the holy Quran, and believe in Allah that he will take you out of this depressive state.
