While studying to be a commercial driver, you come across a lot of requirements that needs to be met. Getting a DOT physical is one of them. It is required to get a CDL license. But how much do I have to spend to go for a DOT physical? Will I have to break a bank? Well, you don’t really have to spend a lot money and energy to go for a DOT physical.

DOT (department of transportation) physical exam is a health and safety exam required by the Department of Transportation before you’re legally permitted to operate a commercial vehicle. In addition to operating a commercial vehicle, the driver must be able to do all the functions associated with the job to include tarping, climbing, and walking, for example.  This ensures the safety of drivers and others on the road. 

WHAT DO I GET IN DOT PHYSICAL?

Due to the fact that a DOT exam seeks to evaluate your capability to operate a commercial vehicle based on your current and last medical results, it’s highly important that you come prepared for the appointment and bring the appropriate documentation for your medical conditions such as CPAP reports, diabetic testing, and previous cardiac testing. -Hearing: To drive a commercial vehicle, your hearing needs to be in a good state. You can even use a hearing aid here; but whether you choose to or not, you’ll have to be able to hear whispered sounds in one ear from 5 feet away.

-Vision: This is the most important feature of every driver. To ensure drivers safety on the road, all drivers are required to carry out a vision test and have 20/40 visual acuity in each eye and at least 70” peripheral vision. Corrective eye lenses are permitted.

-Urinalysis: For a DOT exams urinalysis check, it’ll examine the urine for sugar, blood, and protein levels to note any diabetic, pre-diabetic, or kidney issues.

-Heart and blood pressure: The medical examiner also checks your blood pressure and other related issues. He’ll also check your heart rate for irregularities.

-Physical exam: Aside from the tests listed above, your medical examiner will check your eyes, ears, heart, lungs, spine, chest, neurological abilities, vascular functions and other assessments.

WHAT’S IS THE COST OF A DOT PHYSICAL?

The cost of a DOT physical carrier varies. However, it ranges from $85 to $226 on an average, with some providers charging as low as $50. Certain carriers may even cover the whole expenses of your CDL physical while others may not.
